“What we’ve always done is…”

Any time I hear that in a strategy session, I know we have a problem.
The minute a leader defaults to that line, they are telling you their primary loyalty is to the past, not the future. They are defending a version of the business that existed six months ago, two years ago, ten years ago, in a world that no longer exists.
In The Adaptability Code I call this “the inertia of success.”
What got you here starts to feel sacred. Processes, products and business models become untouchable simply because they worked once.
In a world moving at pace, being rooted in “what got us here” is the fastest way to make sure you do not stay here.
Success creates these blind spots. Because when leaders cling to legacy models, old assumptions and comfort habits, they do not just slow down innovation, they invite disruption.
The market will move. Customers will move. Competitors will move.
If you are still worshipping the old way of doing things, you will be moved… out. And permanently!
If those five words are common in your meetings, you do not need a new strategy deck yet. You need a new leadership mindset.
Future-ready leaders do something different. They honour what worked, but they refuse to worship it. They are willing to retire old assumptions, redesign models and experiment with new ways of creating value, even while things are still “going well.”
